Throughout the Bible, altars hold a profound place of importance as sacred spaces of encounter with the divine.

Altars serve as memorials, reminding us of God’s faithfulness. Just as Jacob set up a pillar as a witness to God’s presence (Genesis 28:18-22), our altars become testimonies of answered prayers, breakthroughs, and divine interventions. Altars are places of worship and surrender. In Genesis 12, we witness Abraham building altars to commemorate his encounters with God. Altars symbolize our commitment and devotion, offering a tangible space to present our lives as living sacrifices.

The old patriarchs knew about the ability of the altar to provide. The altar can protect, promote and can project. The word of God can come from the altar and project into your life. The altar can preserve as it did for Isaac. It can be turned to speak when provoked just like Solomon did with his magnanimous sacrifice. The altar is however dumb and dormant until you stir it up to speak for you and It takes a sacrifice to make the altar speak (Hebrews 10:4; 1 Peter 2:5), the altar responds and answers to the language of sacrifice. Romans 12:1 urges that you give yourself wholly to God.

As we build altars in our lives—personal prayer spaces, moments of worship, and acts of sacrificial love—we create opportunities for divine encounters.
