Even though the two are entangled and often confused together, there is a difference between praying with the spirit and praying in the spirit.
“What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” 1 Corinthians 14:15
Praying in the spirit means praying in tongues. And we really do need to pray with th spirit because it is a mystery unto God. But while there is need to pray with the spirit, praying in the spirit is far more important.
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit. Being watchful to this end with the perseverance and supplication for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:18
Praying in the spirit means Praying with the whole of your heart, as you wholeheartedly wait upon the Lord. While praying in the spirit, the Holy Ghost is praying through us, and all we need to do is to surrender to Him and let the prayer flows from within our spirit which is connected to the Holy Spirit.
While praying with the spirit can happen anytime, praying in the spirit cannot, for praying in the spirit is impossible without fellowship and intimacy with the father.
