A ‘mantle’ is a Scriptural metaphor for a calling, ministry & anointing ordained by God for individuals.
The mantle represented a man’s gift, the call of GOD, and the purpose for which GOD had called him. The mantle served as a symbolic purpose, in the case of the prophets, showing they were wrapped in GOD’s authority.
Elijah’s mantle was more than the regular cloak that he wore. It represented his appointment as a Prophet of God. When he threw it over Elisha it was a prophetic act, declaring that the mantle—and the office of the Prophet it represented—was destined to be Elisha’s in the future. (1 Kings 19:19)
The mantle served the practical purpose of keeping people warm and protecting them from the elements. It also served a symbolic purpose, in the case of the prophets, showing they were wrapped in God’s authority. Like all imagery in the Old Testament, the mantle presents a visible representation of a New Testament principle. The mantle can be seen as a symbol of the anointing of the Holy Spirit whom God so graciously gives to all Christians, the people of His choosing.
Sometimes, the desire God places in our hearts is just one indication, among other confirmations, of the calling that is ours.
